McBride - Bumpus Genealogy

       Edouad Bompasse, (Edward Bumpas), as he was called in the Plymouth Colony,
was the first of his name, as far as can be found to arrive in this country. The name has
taken on various spellings as follows: Bump, Bumpas, Bumpass, Bumpers, Bumps
and Bumpus, as you will find in this text.
       Edouad came as a young man on the ship " Fortune " the first ship after the
"Mayflower 1". The  "Fortune" arrived at Plymouth, now Massachuetts, on Nov 10, 1621.
       The name Bompasse is probably of French origin, possibly Hugenot. The old
Norman and French name Bonpas family originated in Perpignam in the extreme south
western portion of France near the Mediterranean. The name probably came to England
with Mormans, and perhaps as a name derived from Boneboz in Nomandy, a Fief held
from the Earls of Mellent.
       One source of information states that Edouad Bompasse was born abt 1605, of
St. Bartholomew Parish, London, England., died 3 Feb 1693, Marshfield, Plymouth Co.,
Massachusetts., married 1628 in Ma., Hannah, born about 1607, England, died 12 Feb.
1693, Marshfield, Massachusetts.
        Edouad Bompasse was probably a member of the Protestants who fled from
Holland to Amsterdam. He was reportedly with the pilgrims in Leyden, Holland and
probably went to England with those who returned after the first attempt to sail for
America failed.  Willison in his Saints and Strangers,  states that Edouad Bompasse
was a saint and native Leydener. Leyden was located six to seven miles up the Rhine
River and was considered the spiritual calital of Protestant Europe.
        In 1623 he received one share in the land allotment as one of those who came in
the Fortune and in 1627 a share in the cattle, indicating he was unmarried.
        Edouad or Edward as he was now called, was one of the original proprietors of
Middleboro, where his son Joseph settled.
        After 1656 he seems to have lost control of his properties and through lack of
cooperation in the family, he and his wife Hannah were to some extent dependent
upon the community for their well being.
        Although he and his sons as  first borne in the colony" were eligible for grants they
did not take advantage of their positions.
        In the next generation several branches of the family prospered & left good estates.​

       Leo Shirley Bumpus, First child of Fred (Fritz) and Elma Davison Bumpus,
b. 10 May 1889 - d. 31 Oct 1972. m. Nora Brown of Rockland Twnshp, Venango
County, 19 Feb 1916. She died 8 Oct 1935. 2nd Marriage ( Leo ) - Marie Riddle on
25 Sep 1939 at Clarion, Pa. She ( Marie ) was born 29 Nov 1893. She died 14 Feb
1972.  Her full name was Marie Twila George Riddle.  Leo ( "Pop " ) died 31 Oct 1972.
Nora, Marie and Leo are buried at the Sunville Cemetery - close to Bradleytown, Pa.
        Leo ( "Pop ") & Nora had 7 children born to them - 2 dieing in infancy. They were :

m. 22 Oct 1943 Robert Noel   …  b. d. 24 Oct 1994
They had 3 daughters:

Margaret Elma Bumpus McBride is buried at Slippery Rock, Pa.

Florence Elizabeth Bumpus Smith and Elery L. Smith are buried at Black Ash Cemetery, Guys Mills, Pa.

All others are buried at the Sunville Cemetery - close to Bradleytown, Pa.

        Simeon Bumpus Sr., was born 31 Aug 1739, at Wareham, Lyme Co., Served in the
Revolutionary War.  Was at Barkamstead Co., at Herkimer, N.Y. in 1800. He died in
1793 in Lorraine, NY. He married Experience Gladding Gladwin Putnam and/or said

to be a daughter of General Putnam. She was born abt 1740 and died bef 1840. The
records indicate they had 7 children.Their 3rd child/son was Gladding Gladwyn Bumpas.
        The 7 children listed are : Nathan, Isaac, Gladwyn Gladding, Simeon Jr., Jason,
Stephen, and Lydia BUMPUS. ( assume name spelling change by Simeon )

         Gladding Gladwyn Bumpus., was b. 17 Feb 1771 - d. 21 March 1833. Buried
at Lorraine, NY of Lorraine, Jeffereson Co., NY. This record in Rev. Bailey's Early Conn.
Married Sarah Judd in 1792 at Torrington, Conn. She was born 9 Aug 1771. She died
28 April 1846 at Lorraine, NY of lorraine Co., NY.  Records indicate they had 4 children.
The oldest child and son was Erastus Sterling Bumpus.
         Records show the following children : Erastus Sterling, Hannah, Luna and Ursula.

       Erastus Sterling Bumpus ( Fritz )., born 31 May 1815, probably at Larraine, NY.
Married Ann Finnette Shirley on 2 July 1839. She was born in 1816 in Pennsylvania
and died in 1889 in Pennsylvania. Rev. Bumpas was a Free Will Baptist Minister. He
died 23 Jan 1880 in Pennsylvania. They are buried at the Small Cemetery, Jackson
Township, Venango Co., (South of Bradleytown) Pennsylvania.  Records seem to
indicate they had 8 children. The youngest - son being Frederick Rufus Bumpas.
        Records indicate the following children : Sarah Ann, Lorenzo Dow, Martha M.,
Susan F., Nancy U., Luna Olivia, Twin Infant (?), Frederick Rufus Bumpus.

        Frederick Rufus Bumpus (Fritz), Youngest son of Erastus Sterling and Annette
Finnette Bumpus.  He was born 20 Sep 1869 in Jackson Township. He married
Elma Elizabeth Davison, of Bradleytown on 19 April 1888. She was born in 1866 at
Cooperstown, Pa. She died 19 Oct 1858 in Pa. She was 2nd of 4 children. ( Dau of
Wesley Mathis Brown -  Sarah Jane Forker ) He died 29 March 1926 in Pa. They are
buried at Small Cemetery, Jackson Township. Other children of Erastus and Ann were
Lorenzo, who had two daughters, Edna and Alice and one son Lamont, Lou Bumpus,
a sister of Fritz married a Shields. Still Other children of Fred and Elma were :
Leo Shirley, b. 10 may 1889, Max (James) Maxwell b. 25 Feb 1891, Leonard D. 
b. 29 Sep 1893, Bernice Irene b. 4 Sep 1895, 2 infant girls prob. 1897 & 1898 resp.,
Theodore Dalton b. 23 July 1900, Nellie Marie b. 8 July 1904, Ferne Elizabeth b. 6 Aug
1908, and Norris b. April 1910.

        Edward Bumpas.,  born about 1603 - 1605 near London, England.  He sailed
from London, England on the ship " Fortune "  arriving in Plymouth, Massachusetts,
10 November 1621. He had Land in Duxbury, and Marshfield, Massachusetts. He
was living in "Duck Hill" in 1684. Wife " Hannah " was born abt 1607 in England. She
died after 1693, in Marshfield, a widow. Edward died 3 February 1693 in Marshfield.
Records show they had 8 children. Other Records indicate there were 13 children.
Edward and Hannah had at least twelve children, 8 being recorded at Marshfield. In
my research 13 have been indicated. There is some question if Faith was really a
first child. Some researchers show that she was born in 1630. Others say she may
have been a twin to Sarah, and she died at birth or shortly after.
        Comments:  Of the twelve children, eight being recorded at Marshfield and the
births of the last four were not recorded. Since Bumpas lived in Plymouth, then in
Duxbury, and by 1643 in Marshfield, we cannot tell in which town any of the first six
were born, but the last six are assumed to be born at Marshfield.
        The children's names indicated are:  Faith, Sarah, Elizabeth, John Sr., Edward,
Joseph, Isaac, Jacob Sr., Hannah, Philip, Thomas, Mary, and Samuel Bumpas.

        John Bumpas Sr ., First son of Edward and Hannah, born 2 Jan. 1636 - died
before 7 March 1715-16. Born at Marshfield, Mass. (Of Scituate and Rochester) His
Wife was Sarah Hunter. She was born about 1650 and died after 1710. Records seem
to indicate they had 10 children. Their 5th child and son was Isaac Bumpas,
        The names indicated by records are : Mary, John Jr., Samuel, James, Isaac,
Zoar, Job, Sarah, Edward and Jeremiah Bumpas.

         Isaac Bumpas., Fourth son of John and Mary, born at Rochester, Mass (Lyme
Conn.)  19 December 1761 nad died 19 Dec 1761 in Lyme, New London, Conn.
His wife was Mary Perry. She was born 21 Dec 1675 in Sandwich, Barnstable, Mass.
She died in 1741 at Rochester, Plymouth Co., Mass.  Records to indicate that they
had 4 children. The fourth child and son was Nathan Bumpas.
        Names indicated by records are : Josiah, Deborah, Rhoda and Nathan Bumpas.

         Nathan Bumpas., born 25 Sep 1717 at Rochester, Mass and died bef 1817.
He married Lydia Bumpas in 1738. She wa b born abt 1718 and bef 1818. The records
indicate they had 3 children. Their first and oldest son was Simeon Bumpas.
         Names indicated by records are :  Simeon, Jesse and Morris.
